Martin Girash, Ph.D., C.Psych. is a psychologist by profession and spent the first twenty-five years (1972-1997) of his career in the field of children’s mental health.
From 1978 through 1983 he supported his wife in owning and operating a flying school and small air charter service.
In 1998, he was appointed Interim Chief Operating Officer for Windsor Regional Hospital (WRH) and subsequently successfully competed for the position of President and Chief Executive Officer, a position which he held until retirement in 2007. During his ten year tenure in this position he oversaw the integration of newly merged cultures within WRH, the restructuring of hospital services and programs as well as the physical expansion of that organization’s acute care site. He also supported Windsor Regional Hospital in establishing an Energy Stewardship Program and served on the Minister of Energy’s Advisory Committee. Most significantly, he supported the development of “workplace wellness” and “patient partnership” cultures within the organization.
During his career he served as a volunteer on, among other organizations, the Big Brother’s of Windsor/Essex, the Mayor’s Committee on Children’s Services in Windsor, the Southwest Mental Health Implementation Task Force, the Ontario Cancer Services Implementation Committee and the Operations Steering Committee of the Joint Policy and Planning Committee of the Ministry of Health & Long Term Care and the Ontario Hospital Association.
Following retirement from Windsor Regional Hospital in December of 2007 he conducted a part time private practice, primarily as an organizational consultant for community health services.
He is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychology of the University of Windsor. Between 1972 and 1997 he taught undergraduate courses in introductory and developmental (child, adolescent and adult) psychology and graduate courses in child psychotherapy. He has also served on several M.A. and Ph.D. thesis committees.
He received the Award of Merit from the Ontario Psychological Association in 2000, the Clark Award from the University of Windsor in 2003 and the Paul Vasey “Spirit of Children” Award from Maryvale Adolescent and Family Services in 2009. He is an Honorary Member of the Essex County Medical Society. In 2015 Martin was awarded a Doctorate of Laws (honoris causa) by the University of Windsor.
In 2004 he was appointed to the Board of Governors of the University of Windsor. He served on the Presidential Search Committee and as chair of the Ad Hoc Governance and Human Resources Committees. Having served as Vice-Chair of the Board of Governors for several years, he ended his tenure on the Board as Chair from 2011-2012.
As Chair of the Erie St. Clair LHIN Board of Directors, Martin is committed to the patient experience by improving access throughout the patient’s health care journey.
